Masahito Oshita?
08/18/07 at 03:48:31

Does anybody know anything about this maker? I have a guitar of his I bought in California in the early 1970s [edited from 1990s]. At the time, I preferred it to the Kohnos I was trying.

Does anybody know if Oshita is still making guitars? I've tried seaching with Google, but I can't find anything about Oshita or his guitars at all.

This is not particularly urgent or important. I'm just a little bit curious, that's all.

I have such a guitar too, nylon, and know a couple of people with the same. They were imported for a while through the All Guitar Center in Anaheim, CA. Don't know where you picked your's up. Apparently, the maker left off making them, and no one I know ever knew what happened to him. Are you still playing it? ---geoff

Yes, the All Guitar Center is where I got mine. I was taking lessons for a time from Seiko Sesoko, who owned the shop, back then. I still have my Oshita, but the top is kind of falling apart, and I haven't been able to get it repaired to my satisfaction, so I'm having it retopped. It's a pity Oshita dropped from sight. Those were some promising instruments.

I got mine used from the World of Strings in Long Beach then  took lessons from Seiko for a few years. Seiko died not that long ago, and I attended his memorial service...though I hadn't seen him for decades (this is a long story which I won't go into)...which is what got me thinking about the Oshita guitar. According to Seiko's son Tony, Oshita got depressed and stopped making instruments. Well that's all that I know. Oshita as a guitar maker is lost to history, unless you want to go to Japan and track him down.

My guitar has held up well. The top was German silver spruce and I would hate to have it replaced. There are other tweaks which should be done on the frets, bridge etc...but I don't have the time or money for that now. ---geoff

Thanks for the info, geoff. Guess we'll never know more, since I for one am not going to go to Japan just to try to find out! Hope you continue to enjoy your guitar.
